Czimber's student portraits have something in common with archival university photographs — the sense of catching people at the beginning of whatever they'll become. The academic setting is present in posture and expression rather than backdrop: this is what it looks like to take ideas seriously at an age when taking ideas seriously is still more urgent than anything else. The echoes in the title are what remain when those specific students are no longer students — which is most of what these paintings now carry.
