Postwar is a slippery word. It can mean the period that follows violence — the absence of war — or it can mean the active work of rebuilding, which looks like ordinary life only from a distance. Czimber's postwar portraits occupy the second meaning: people doing the work of continuing, which is what recovery looks like close up. Not triumph, not tragedy — the middle ground of carrying on, which is what most of the people in most of the affected countries were actually doing, most of the time.
