This painting was made on linen — not as an aesthetic choice, exactly, but because linen was available when canvas wasn't. In Czimber's Hungary, material scarcity was a fact you worked around or with, and the linen became the ground for portraits that would otherwise not exist. What you're looking at is a painting whose surface is itself a document: the textile carries the period's constraints, and the portraits painted on it carry the period's people. History isn't only in what's depicted here — it's in what the work is made of.
