The decision to paint common people — not aristocrats, not political figures, not subjects chosen for their cultural significance — is itself a statement Czimber made consistently. Midcentury Hungary had official ideas about how ordinary people should be represented in art; his paintings don't follow that program. These are specific individuals who happen not to be famous, rendered with the same care usually reserved for more consequential subjects. The fact that they survived at all as paintings is its own form of evidence about what Czimber thought mattered.
