Most portals in this collection lead somewhere external — another world, another dimension, another place. This one leads inward, which changes the entire visual problem: how do you depict a passage to a version of yourself that exists somewhere other than where you currently are? The spiritual tradition the title draws from (higher self, the more complete version of the self that is accessible but not routinely inhabited) suggests the destination is real but not spatial. The portal format gives visual form to a concept that is otherwise entirely interior.
