Resilience photographed or painted after the fact is documentary; resilience painted during the period of hardship is something else — evidence made in real time, while the test was still running. Czimber was painting the people around him while the thing that would test them was still present. The portrait records a quality that the subject may not have been fully aware of holding: the particular look of someone who has absorbed something difficult and not yet decided what it will mean. That uncertainty is part of what the painting carries.
