Painting a generation from the inside produces something different from a sociological study: you paint what you know rather than what represents. These portraits don't pretend to cover everyone; they cover who was present. That limitation is their honesty. A generation of peers, rendered by one of their own, using the directness that only comes from having been in the same room during the same events.
