Midcentury Hungary looks like everywhere and nowhere in particular — the same stone architecture you'd find across Central Europe, the same way people dress when clothes need to last. Czimber painted his townsfolk without romanticizing what life in a Soviet-era satellite state actually meant: these are people managing rather than thriving. But nothing in them is defeated. They are going about the things people go about, which is the only honest portrait of how ordinary life continued under difficult circumstances.
